Our Buy an Apple, Give an Apple Initiative
What does it all mean?
Up to 11%* of all apples grown in the UK go to waste. Millions of apples don’t make it onto supermarket shelves - sometimes because they’re a bit too big, too small, too quirky, or simply too many.
In 2024, the UK grew over 250,000 tonnes of apples, so that means over 71.5 million perfectly edible apples going to waste, enough to give 370,000 children an apple a day for the whole school year.
Fewer than 1 in 5 primary school children eat their ‘5 a day’ portions of fruit & veg.
That’s where we come in.
With our Buy an Apple, Give an Apple initiative we are on a mission to provide every primary school child in Hackney with an apple a day during school time.
Most of the year, our apples come from local growers, like Mansfields in Kent.
At other times, we rescue surplus fruit from further afield. But it’s always local and seasonal.
We deliver these apples to community minded juice bars, cafés, and shops.
Every apple redistributed means more free fruit for local primary schools - that’s the heart of our Buy an Apple, Give an Apple initiative.
